Telegram Desktop IPC Injection (CVE-2026-107181): Deep Links, Local Files, and Session Risk
Admin · October 16, 2026 · 7 views
Desktop apps have localhost IPC, too
CVE-2026-107181 affects Telegram Desktop through 7.2.8 (fixed 7.2.9): a crafted tg:// deep link can trigger IPC record-separator injection in single-instance handling, reach a legacy file-send path, and exfiltrate local files — including material that enables account takeover if session artifacts are exposed.
Impact is user interaction (victim opens a link) and is not classic remote shellcode RCE on the OS. Research and PoC tooling: CVE-2026-107181 on pocbit.org (upstream 00nx/telegram-account-takeover-poc).
| | | |---|---| | Class | IPC injection → arbitrary local file read / exfil | | Platform focus | Windows (reported research) | | User action | Open malicious deep link |
Describe the bug without an exploit recipe
External links enter Telegram Desktop URI handling → single-instance IPC parsing. When record separators are not handled safely, one logical “open this chat” request can be interpreted as additional IPC records. If a record reaches an internal file operation without proper authorization, the client may upload local file content to a destination the attacker controls — turning “click a link” into data theft.
That is qualitatively different from server-side WordPress CVEs in your feed: patching is client version, not .htaccess.

Defender checklist (enterprise & personal)
| # | Action | Detail |
|---|--------|--------|
| 1 | Version | Inventory Telegram Desktop builds — target ≥ 7.2.9 |
| 2 | Deploy | MDM / software center push; block installs of ≤ 7.2.8 |
| 3 | User training | Do not open untrusted tg:// or “Open in Telegram” prompts from email/DMs |
| 4 | IR playbooks | Compromise = rotate sessions, revoke active devices in Telegram settings, not only “change Windows password” |
| 5 | Lab | Disposable VM + fixed vs vulnerable build comparison (authorized only) |
What this is not
- Not “patch nginx and forget” — endpoint client patch cycle.
- Not proven arbitrary code execution in every advisory wording — prioritize file read / session exposure when scoping risk.
- Not mitigated by blocking port 443 to Telegram servers — the trigger is local URI handling.

Can EDR block it?
Heuristic link blocking helps; vendor fix is the durable control.
Bottom line
CVE-2026-107181 belongs in endpoint hygiene alongside browser and mail-client updates: push Telegram Desktop 7.2.9+, treat deep links as untrusted input, and rehearse session revocation when desktop compromise is suspected.
